Baby, You Can Drive My Car

Well, perhaps not — but we will certainly admire it…

One of the most pleasant surprises of an already very pleasant summer has been to see so many of our regulars join us for Sunday lunch with their magnificent automobiles in tow. Rolls-Royces, Bentleys, Aston Martins, fine feats of German and Italian engineering — we appreciate and enjoy them all. The regulars on our terrace agree. Our own Jeremy King is among our automotive aficionados — he is still driving the 1973 Bristol 411 that he purchased in 1985. Why?

Because like all women and fine wine, the Bristol simply gets better with age.

“Rather than a Sunday car, it is my everyday car,” he clarifies. “AA Gill once asked where it was and on telling him it was in the garage he asked. ‘What’s wrong – has it run out of Moustache Wax?’ He could talk — he drove a hideous aquamarine Blue Rolls Royce with a personalised number plate!”
