“Has she had work done?”
It’s a refrain heard often at Arlington—we’ve been told that there’s something about our lighting that tends to have an airbrushing effect on one’s features. And who wouldn’t mind looking a decade younger, even for a few hours?
According to Studio Shayne Brady’s founder and creative director Shayne Brady, a longtime collaborator with Jeremy on the design and architecture of his restaurants, Arlington’s signature glow comes from a most unexpected source—the humble spotlight.
‘Having a spot directed to the centre of the table makes it feel so romantic, because of the way it sparkles off of the glasses and the crisp, white linen,’ explains Shayne. Because the room is black and white, the glow feels even warmer; it creates intimate cocoons of light.’
To achieve a similar effect at home, Shayne advises against industrial spotlights, which can overwhelm smaller spaces. Instead, install a chandelier or hanging lantern so that it drops down over the table to create what he calls a ‘great pool of light.’ ‘You want warm golden tones, not white,’ he warns. ‘The good news is that LEDs have come so far now. There are many more options.’ Thank you, Shayne!
