For our first Long Lunch at Arlington, we are delighted to be joined by London designer Emilia Wickstead and her guest, Caroline Issa, the magazine publisher and fashion consultant.

Emilia Wickstead established her luxury womenswear label in 2008, and is known for her modern, feminine style, combining tradition and the romance of bygone eras with contemporary twists. Her label is a favourite for countless powerful women, from royalty to A-list stars. Born in New Zealand, Emilia was recently commissioned to design the uniforms for the country’s national airline. Emilia’s collections comprise seasonal ready-to-wear, homeware and bridalwear, as well as bespoke and made-to-order services

WHAT ARE THE KEY ELEMENTS FOR A SUCCESSFUL LONG LUNCH?
The best long lunches have a magic to them — a mix of ease, generosity, and charm. A beautifully dressed table, food that feels a little decadent in abundance, and conversation that moves from the light-hearted to the unexpected. I love a guest list that spans generations or industries — that’s when the best conversations come out, and most of all with the best of friends.

WHAT DO YOU VALUE MOST IN A LUNCH COMPANION?
Curiosity and quick wit. I love people who come armed with great stories and even better questions.

WHAT DID YOU EAT/DRINK TODAY?
A boiled egg and soldiers with my children, fresh mint tea, and sliced kiwi. For lunch, Italian roasted vegetables. At Arlington? Chopped salad and fries.

WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE – RESTAURANT OR OTHER – YOU HAVE EVER RECEIVED?
There’s two: “Trust your taste. It will take you further than trying to please everyone.”
There’s only one thing in life, and that’s the continual renewal of inspiration.” – Diana Vreeland

WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON AT THE MOMENT?
Designing our next collection — my favourite part of the creative cycle. It’s always a whirlwind of fabrics, fittings, and constant cups of tea. Our bespoke work is expanding — there’s nothing more rewarding than creating something uniquely personal for a client. And we have exciting growth happening in the US, which is keeping us on our toes. Lots of beautiful things in motion!
